Over-Easy: Manual Rotation of Occiput Posterior
3 MEAC Contact Hours (0.3 CEU)
The ‘Sunny-Side Up’ baby is dreaded by many midwives. While a variation of normal that occasionally progresses easily, the posterior presentation overall makes for an increase in rates of cesarean, perineal laceration, postpartum hemorrhage, endometritis, chorioamnionitis, poor Apgar scores, and increased NICU admission. To say nothing of the host of tired and frustrated midwives and clients left in its wake. The tools for achieving the optimal fetal position are many and it is helpful to have a variety. This course focuses on teaching one powerful ‘tool’, the skill of manual rotation. When prudently used it can reduce the need for transport and decrease the cesarean rate in the majority of attempts.
An interactive learning experience, we include an overview of the physiology of the posterior presentation, a review of the current literature on manual rotation, the technique, and hands-on simulations with MODEL-med ® Sophie and her Mum. This incredible tool features a life-like model to help you truly experience the skill of manual rotation, all with Lisa instructing. Each participant will get to attempt a manual rotation on the simulator as well as observe while others are performing. The 6-person limit on class size ensures everyone gets ample opportunity to practice and ask questions.
Just Sew: Laceration Repair for Midwives
3 MEAC Contact Hours (0.3 CEU)
Midwifery skills so often prevent significant perineal lacerations, making repair an infrequently needed skill. In many midwives, this makes for a lack of confidence in repair skills and increases their anxiety when suturing is necessary. This course strives to increase the confidence of midwives and students by reviewing basic supplies, equipment, and skills while offering ample time for questions and supervised practice. Featuring instruction on suturing first and second-degree perineal lacerations in out-of-hospital settings, this is an extremely practical course for midwives and students. After a brief didactic overview of the fundamentals of suturing, there is ample time for hands-on supervised practice on midwifery specific models. Models are made to simulate laceration repair in the commonly encountered situations of midwifery practice. All supplies are included for this session.
This class does require extensive preparation and purchase of teaching supplies for each student. While the ticket for the course is transferrable to another person, $50 is considered non-refundable if the spot is cancelled for refund.
Young At Heart: Antepartum and Intrapartum Fetal Heart Rate Assessment
4 MEAC Contact Hours (0.4 CEU)
Diving deep into the physiology of the developing fetal nervous system, this course offers practical ways to implement current evidence into everyday practice. The foundational understanding of fetal heart rate anatomy and physiology as well as the physiology of accelerations and decelerations, aids in both our understanding and decision making during labor! While establishing the fundamentals of fetal heart rate physiology, this class focuses on a review of the current literature surrounding intermittent auscultation, especially the safety and methodology . (Spoiler alert: all the new technology in the last few years hasn’t been able to improve anything above intermittent auscultation and there is ample research to prove that!) It also includes fetal well-being tests specifically applicable for out-of-hospital midwives, and it is filled with audio files and hands-on practical steps for documenting in the community setting.
